A Study in Blue and Pink
For one month in NYC, billboards across the city featured artwork to bring awareness to Happy, an elephant living in isolation in the Bronx Zoo.
#FREEHAPPY was curated by Cynthia Von Buhler.

Billboard installation at the intersection of Atlantic and Classon, Brooklyn, 2025.
The #FreeHappy billboard exhibition featured the work of: Diane Matyas, Anne Spalter, Kelli Bickman, myself, and Lisa Goldberg.
A Study in Blue and Pink is an illustration that contrasts a cheerful pink with the sorrowful blue expressed in the creature’s tears, which flow like rivers across its wrinkled skin. The piece evokes the captivity of a sentient animal and references the Central African river systems where the species is most commonly found.
Have you spotted any lovely pachyderms in the wild of NY?
